What is BookTok — and where do you actually start?
"BookTok" is the book side of TikTok: readers posting short, emotional reactions to what they are reading. It has become one of the biggest forces in publishing — more than a third of UK readers aged 16 to 39 now find new books there, and in April 2026 TikTok launched an official UK #BookTok bestseller list with the National Literacy Trust.
What actually sells on BookTok
- Romantasy — romance plus fantasy world-building, usually in long series.
- Contemporary romance, often with a "grumpy/sunshine" or sports-team hook.
- Emotional literary fiction — the "this book destroyed me" category.
- A steady undercurrent of thrillers and dark academia.
How to start without reading twelve books
Pick one standalone before committing to a series. A single well-reviewed contemporary romance or a one-volume fantasy tells you fast whether the style is for you. If it lands, then start a series.
A note on formats
BookTok favourites often sell out in paperback and stay pricey in hardback for a while. Our used fiction is the cheapest way in, and the best-seller shelf tracks what is moving right now.
If it is not for you
That is fine — BookTok skews to particular genres. The rest of the fiction range is much wider, and our other guides cover non-fiction, kids and classics.
