New to manga? A starter guide for adults and teens

Book trends

Manga — Japanese comics — is the single strongest growth category in UK print right now, and not only with teenagers. If the format is unfamiliar, a few basics make the shelf much easier to navigate.

How it is read

Most manga is printed right-to-left, so the "back" cover is the front and you read panels from the top-right. Volumes are numbered; a series can run to dozens. Start at volume one.

The main categories

  • Shonen — action and adventure, aimed at a younger-teen audience but read widely.
  • Shojo — relationship-driven stories, often school settings.
  • Seinen — adult readership, darker or more complex themes.
  • Slice-of-life — low-stakes, character-focused, very readable.

Where to begin

Pick a completed or long-running series with a clear premise, buy the first two or three volumes, and see if the pace suits you — manga reads fast, so a volume is a short commitment. Browse what we have in comics & graphic novels.

Buying tip

Because series run long, the per-volume cost adds up. Check our used copies and buy in small batches rather than a whole run at once.
